Williamsburg Flea Market

This past weekend in New York was beautiful. After terrible weather for so long, it FINALLY felt like Spring bordering on Summer.

Therefore since my new apartment is in the super hip neighborhood of the East Village— and minutes away from the L train, my friends and I decided to go to the Williamsburg Flea Market Sunday afternoon.

Clear skies at the Brooklyn Flea!

Williamsburg, for those of you unfamiliar with New York is a neighborhood in Brooklyn, which is one of New York’s five boroughs.

The five boroughs are:

  1. Manhattan (where I live!)
  2. Brooklyn
  3. Queens
  4. The Bronx
  5. Staten Island

Willamsburg is known for its artsy, hipster culture and growing population. Lots of yuppies (young professionals) live there because it’s slightly more affordable but still very close to the city! Since it is so artsy, we knew the flea market would be really cool. Also since I absolutely love antique, thrift, and vintage stores I couldn’t wait to go.

So many vintage rings!

Well… the market did not disappoint. In fact, it was probably the most gourmet and high end flea I had ever been to. While some stuff was expensive, there were it’s fair share of cheap finds ($3 books from the 1940s!) and I managed to score really pretty 1970’s gold ring with a ‘D’ on it for only $5!!

The gold ring I got! It was made in the 70s!

The food was all fresh, organic and gourmet. Here you can see us eating $6 grilled cheese’s from the Milk Truck.

Mmm! Super delicious Grilled Cheese’s

All in all, it was a lot of fun looking around at all the old jewelry and handmade dresses and furniture. It was interesting to ask about where stuff had come from, who had made it and what the story was for each individual item.

Drained from the sun, we walked back to the L but stopped inside the Artists & Fleas Market - (an indoor market where emerging/independent artists, designers, vintage collectors set up shop.) It was equally as cool as the outdoor market we had come from so we quickly browsed before going back to Manhattan. However we were so tired we decided we’d have to come back another Sunday for this one. Good thing it’s almost summer! I can’t wait to come back!
